Medium yellow flowers with deeper yellow dorsal flares and pleasing fragrance in May. Lustrous dark green mildew-free leaves turn orangey bronze in fall. One of Dodd's Confederate Series, crosses of Exbury azaleas with the heat-tolerant native Florida azalea
Named for the famous Confederate Admiral Raphael Semmes, whose record of 87 Union ships sunk or captured remains unbroken to this day. Beautiful medium yellow-flowers with deeper yellow dorsal flares and pleasing fragrance in May. Very lustrous dark green leaves turn orange-bronze in fall. The handsome leaves are exceptionally mildew-free. One of a series of large-flowered, fragrant, heat tolerant cultivars, several named for famous Confederate personalities. They are the result of crossing large-flowered Exbury azaleas with the heat-tolerant, native Florida Azalea, R. austrinum.
