Our native shortleaf pine is a large, fast growing tree most commonly found in sandy dry locations. Handsome dark blueish-green needles grow in pairs and make up a pyramidal crown, which broadens at the top with maturity. Brown, spiny cones usually won’t appear on trees until 20 years of age. The beauty of this native also lies in the reddish-brown plates of bark that grow more detailed with maturity. In the wild, Pinus echinata will reach 100-140 feet, but in cultivation expect a tree that will reach a maximum height of 60 feet.
