Known as the common witch hazel, this deciduous shrub is native to Eastern North America, and grows zones 3 to 8. It grows to 15-20 feet tall by 15-20 feet wide. Fall blooming from October to December with yellow flowers. The flowers are very fragrant. It is considered to be low maintenance used as hedges, for naturalization, rain gardens and in shrub borders. They grow in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade, preferable dapple shade. It prefers moist, acidic, organically rich soils and tolerates heavy clay soils. They require little pruning, but if necessary prune in early spring.
