PHLOX glaberrima ssp triflora PPAF 'Triple Play'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Joe Pye Weed's Garden Parentage: sport of seedling
Description: Joe Pye Weed's Garden has grown Phlox glaberrima ssp triflora for years and years. They cut it for the flower market. One fall they noticed a 4-inch section of variegation on one stem and bent it down to the ground and plunked a rock on it, hoping it would layer over the winter which it did. Once separated, it turned into a wonderful plant which is very vigorous, can take full sun without bleaching, but also does well in part shade. It does not grow anywhere near as tall as the green form which tends to get too tall and flop. The variegation is soft grey green and white in the sun, more cream in the shade, and has a pink blush and edges in the cool of spring and fall. It also has more white in the variegation on its flower stems. At Joe Pye Weed's they cut the flowers stalks off when they are finished blooming (almost no seeds are produced) and the plant sends up new rosettes of foliage which creates a bright decorative mat for the rest of the year. This foliage usually persists through the winter.
