Description: Deeply-cut, arching, glossy green, spiny, thistle-like leaves form an ornamental mound remaining attractive throughout the growing season. Bold white, snapdragon-like flowers are hooded by spiny, reddish-purple bracts and arranged in vertical rows on substantial spikes which rise well above the foliage. Blooms from late spring into mid summer. Acanthus leaves have a classical appearance and were the source of the Corinthian leaf motif developed and used as a decoration in ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture. The leaves of A. spinosus are more deeply cut and have rigid spines at the lobe tips.
