NYSSA sylvatica 'Zydeco Twist'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Rick Webb/Todd Lasseigne
Description: Fittingly named, this LA selection has twisty braches akin to corkscrew willow(Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa') The tree does grow in normal fashion with a central leader, but the branches twist and twirl as if to a Cajun rhythm. Rick Webb grew the original tree from a central Louisiana seed source. He sent if off to Dr. Severn Dowdie of the Louisiana Nursery Association who gave it to nurseryman Sherwood Akin who grafted it. He eventually sent some to fellow LA nurserywoman Miss Margie Jenkins, a who packed some off to several other nurserymen in TN and NC. Eventually Todd Lasseigne, a native Louisianan, then at the JC Raulston Arboretum in North Carolina, who named it. A great companion for some Wild Magnolias!
