MAGNOLIA 'David'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: garden hybrid/Polly Hill Arboretum Parentage: M. officinalis X M. tripetala
Description: A Polly Hill Arboretum Introduction. Philip Seitner donated seeds from his Magnolia officinalis to the American Magnolia Society in 1981. From twenty of these seeds planted in the Arboretum's nursery one has proved to be a hybrid with Magnolia tripetala. The source of Seitner's officinalis was the Lushan Botanic Garden. All Seitner's trees were M. officinalis var. biloba. Phillipe de Spoelbergh of Belgium and Stephen Spongberg identified this selection in 1995 as a hybrid of M. officinalis and M. tripetala. It first bloomed in 1991 with large white flowers, tall and crinkled at first, with a pleasant fragrance. It has been registered as 'David' to honor Dr. David H. Smith, founder and first President of the Polly Hill Arboretum. It is growing a few steps from the Entrance Garden at the Visitor Center. The flowers are pleasantly fragrant but have not yet produced any fruit. The leaves are not bi-lobed although the seed parent was bi-lobed in cultivation.
