MAGNOLIA 'Lemonade'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Phil Savage/Dennis Ledvina Parentage: (acuminata var. subcordata 'Miss Honeybee' X 'Brozzonii')
Description: Dennis Ledvina says: "An excellent and rather mysterious Magnolia. Phil's(Savage) notes list the parentage as M. 'Brozzonii x Magnolia(Michelia)*doltsopa. ... plants of M. 'Miss Honeybee' x M. 'Brozzonii' (were) growing in the same container." It is likely there was mixup this is of the latter parentage. Magnolia taxonomist Richard Figlar has studied the plant and the evidence is pretty overwhelming that there is no M. doltsopa in this plant. Richard adds: "The only curious character with 'Lemonade' is the 4 to 5 normal sized tepals with 2 to 3 sepaloid tepals. This is lower than in any natural magnolia! Probably this is just a serendipitous "defective" character that just occurred with this cross. I think that the relatively few tepals adds to the charm of the blooms." Dennis further states: "Regardless of parentage, it is an excellent pale yellow, tall and slender, long blooming plant. No seed fertility." *The former genus Michellia has now been lumped(combined) into the genus Magnolia.
