PANICUM virgatum 'Shenandoah'
|
Description: Native to a huge range in North America east of the Rocky Mountains, this species was a major component of the original native tallgrass prairies. A beautiful clumping grass, it is an easy species to grow and is very durable. Airy panicles of flowers appear in late July. 'Shenandoah' is notable for its colorful leaves that emerge green in spring, becoming increasingly red, then totally wine red by September. It is also a bit slower growing and shorter than the typical species. A seedling of 'Hanse Herms', it was selected by Hans Simon of Germany. Full sun.
