DRYOPTERIS goldiana
|
Description: This is the largest of the native wood ferns, reaching 4 feet in ideal conditions. It is a slowly spreading groundcover forming clusters of graceful arching fronds. Named for Scottish botanist John Goldie, not for anything to do with color! It is native to seepage slopes and moist woods and prefers moist, rich, well- drained soils in full to partial shade. Needs protection from wind. Spreads slowly by rhizomes. Propagate by division every few years in the spring. Best planted in masses in the shaded or woodland garden.
