DRYOPTERIS carthusiana (spinulosa)
|
Description: A lacy forest fern growing as solitary fronds from a creeping rhizome. Identifiable as a Wood Fern by its larger size, thrice-cut fronds, and woodland habitat. Distinguished from the closely related and nearly identical Intermediate Wood Fern
(Dryopteris intermedia) and Spreading Woodfern (Dryopteris expansa), with which it once shared the common species designation of Dryopteris spinulosa, by the first downward pointing secondary leaflet being longer than the downward pointing subleaflet next to it AND that first large downward pointing subleaflet is attached at or very near the point of attachment of the first upward pointing subleaflet. Thought you might want to know that.
