LINDERA benzoin

Size 10-12" - $18.00

Description: It’s hard to improve on this description of Lindera benzoin from Bill Cullina in his excellent book Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines: “Combine shade tolerance and early, fragrant flowers with radiant fall color and fruits, all on a pretty, flattened oval silhouette, and you have a first-rate ornamental. Certainly, spicebush is not as flashy as a redbud or dogwood, but it has a wild elegance about it that is perfect at the edge of the woods or scattered through trees.” Spicebush is the primary larval food plant of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly, and thrives in moist fertile loamy soil. Will also tolerate drier soil and quite a bit of shade.
