CAMELLIA williamsii 'Aida'
|
Parentage: (C. japonica 'Ville de Nantes' X C. saluenensis 'Dogrose')
Description: We believe we are the first and only nursery to offer this important variety selected in 1974. A camellia-breeding project began at Longwood Gardens in the early 1960s with the main objective to develop camellias that are reliably hardy outdoors in southeastern Pennsylvania. Dr. Clifford Parks, in collaboration with Longwood Gardens, made the first crosses for the project in 1961. The seedling that produced 'Aida' was received from Dr. Parks around 1968. Of many plants trialed at Longwood in an open plot in the nursery, 'Aida' was the only one that survived two exceptionally harsh winters in the 1970’s when the temperatures approached 0º F. Dr. Robert Armstrong, Longwood’s geneticist, made the selection in 1974. Longwood lost its original plant of 'Aida' soon thereafter, and it was thought that no propagations had been made, so it was never introduced. A few years ago a plant was rediscovered in a local garden and propagated. By the way, the flowers are a beautiful large rose form double pink. The plant grows in a formal, narrow conical shape.
