CAMELLIA japonica var. koreana 'Longwood Valentine'
|
Description: In 1984 Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA received Camellia japonica seeds collected in the wild on Sochong Island, South Korea. The resulting plants were grown in an open field at Longwood. After 22 years of evaluation, 'Longwood Valentine' and one other sibling were selected for their ability to withstand the rigors of the climate in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The plant is a heavy budder, the 2.25-inch rosy-red single flowers with yellow anthers open over an extended period starting as early as January and continue through April. The buds have exceptional cold hardiness, so if some open flowers are damaged by cold, more buds will continue to open. Plants were freezer tested hardy to –11°F. The foliage is exceptionally beautiful, leaves are very heavy textured, dark glossy green and nearly round, picking up deep burgundy tones in winter. The leaves are closely spaced on the compact-growing shrub, making a dense, globe shaped plant. Original plant is 10 x 8 feet after 22 years.
