Description: A 2001 introduction by the Arnold Arbore- tum, this was first collected in Jesup County, GA, by the late Harold Epstein of Larchmont, NY, plantsman extrordinaire. Originally classified as a separate species, F. parvifolia; later investigations have placed
it within F. gardenii. It is a diminuitive shrub with a low, dense, mounding form that slowly reaches a height of 10-12 inches and a width of 16 to 18 inches in about five years. The white, bottlebrush like flowers are fragrant and appear in late April to early May. The dark green summer foliage turns yellow to vibrant orange-red in autumn. Though its overall appearance is delicate, the 'Harold Epstein' fothergilla thrives in full sun and is insect and disease resistant. Its ability to sucker and spread allows it to form a good groundcover mat.
