MAGNOLIA macrophylla
|
Description: This tree takes the award for having the largest leaves of any native tree, up to 30 inches long! The giant leaves are clustered at the ends of the branches, and are white underneath. They are oblong in shape and widest between the middle and the tip. The leaves are lobed at the base, which distinguishes it from Magnolia tripetala, the other big leaved native, whose leaf bases are tapered. Also, dormant buds are hairy. Flowers are white and about 12 inches wide in June/July. Prefers partial shade to full sun in a spot sheltered from strong winds, which can damage
the majestic leaves.
