MAGNOLIA kobus var. stellata 'Edward A. Kehr'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Kehr Parentage: (Magnolia 'Two Stones' doubled)
Description: To quote Pat McCracken, who knew Augie Kehr well: “Yes, I do know about this plant. Augie named it [after his brother] BEFORE it ever bloomed. Augie was very upset that he named the plant since when it did finally bloom, the blooms were tiny. He thought that they would be huge since it is an octoploid. It is very fast growing and totally worthless as a flowering plant. Augie wanted it destroyed, but it had already been released. Olav Kalleberg in Norway changed the name to Octopus, [but] this is not allowed since the cultivar had been named earlier by Augie. It is a collector's item ONLY. Maybe some use in breeding, but doubtful of that even.” Hey, if we’re not brutally honest, what kinda reputation would we have?
