Description: An outstanding pyramidal evergreen that maintains a strong upright branching habit and is fast growing. The leaves are its distinguishing feature; dark glossy green and narrow, with a remarkable degree of dense orange brown tomentum that persists throughout the year. This felting also occurs on the leaf petioles, the young branches and the buds of the current season. The flowers, occurring intermittently throughout the Summer, open flat; about 10 inches across, and typically have 12 tepals in three whorls. They are soft and velvety to the touch and are intensely fragrant, having an unusual lemon-like scent. Flowers also persist a bit longer than most M. grandiflora. Reported to be less brittle to snow loads than some others. 'Russet' has survived unscathed by -12? F. It was selected by Maunsell van Rensellaer in 1952, and introduced by the Saratoga Horticul- tural Foundation(CA) in 1965. | ||||
