THUJOPSIS dolobrata
|
Description: A wonderful specimen plant for the right location, featuring a mixture of red, orange and green winter foliage and deeply furrowed red bark. During the growing season the foliage reverts to a more usual green. While it can probably survive in Zone 5, it will only thrive in Zones 6 and 7, and then only if protected from harsh winter winds and never allowed to dry out. In its native Japan it is found in moist rainy areas on acidic soils. If your garden is covered in lichen and the temperatures rarely drop to zero, give this on a try. If sited properly it should reach 45-50 feet. When young, the elkhorn cypress can take quite a bit of shade.
