Description: This unassuming grass has an ancient history of use around the world. The name comes from the Greek, hieros, “sacred,” chloe, “grass” and odorata, from the Latin, “sweet smelling, fragrant.” It is native to the Northern Hemisphere in North America and Europe. Native Americans used it as incense for purification and basket making. It was strewn before church doors on saints' days in northern Europe. In Poland, it is called Zebrovka, “the place where bison graze,” it is used to flavor vodka. Sweetgrass is dried and braided to preserve the scent which is due to its cumarin content. The French use it to flavor candy, tobacco, soft drinks, and perfumes. Spreads by creeping rhizomes. 1 foot tall x indefinite spread.
