HYDRANGEA macrophylla Midnight Duchess™ 'HYMMAD II'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Michael Dirr Parentage: 'Nigra' X 'White Wave' (Rinehart and Reed-08)
Description: One of four new hydrangeas in plant guru Mike Dirr's "Royal MajesticsTM" Series. As Dirr describes it: "This black-purple, rigid stemmed, dark green foliaged, large mauve-pink flowered lacecap seedling from 'Nigra' was completely unexpected. Midnight Duchess produces flowers from buds along the stem (laterals) and also displays high mildew resistance. Definitely more heat and drought resistant, for in a mixed Hydrangea macrophylla planting in the Dirr Chapel Hill, NC garden, Midnight Duchess would be turgid and the leaves upright while all others were dog-eared in the 90?F and greater summer heat in 2005. The sepals dry an eye-catching lime-green. My wife, Bonnie, considers Midnight DuchessTM the most beautiful of all the Royal Majestics
