SILPHIUM laciniatum
|
Description: A Midwestern prairie native, the common name of "compass plant" is derived from the curious manner in which the basal leaves are arranged, orienting themselves north and south. Large, bristly, deeply pinnate (laciniate) leaves ascend the rough stem, giving rise to a flower stalk up to 8 feet in height. Yellow sunflowers are followed by nutritious seeds sought by birds.
