Description: When Bill Cullina of the New England Wildflower Society (NEWS) spied this variegated seedling in a flat of Polemonium reptans var. reptans in 1999, he initially wasn't so sure "all that glitters is gold" as most variegated seedlings revert. But, he carefully potted it up, and though slow at first, as the season progressed it grew larger and more attractive by the week. Each pinnate leaf, composed of around 11 leaflets arranged in two ranks like the rungs of a ladder, was boldly edged white and pink, with light and dark green center. This gift from the May Queen proved to be an unparalleled garden plant, much better than other non-native variegated polemoniums. Bill's head began to hum with the piper's calling, now a royalty for every plant sold goes toward supporting the conservation efforts of the NEWS. Some things still turn to gold.
