MAGNOLIA 'Pegasus'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Lancaster Parentage: (cylindrica X denudata?)
Description: White flowers that open in early spring are 4 inches long and resemble M. denudata but are more slender and longer. The upright flowers stand candle-like on the branches. When older, this magnolia flowers so abundantly that the branches and buds disappear. Roy Lancaster explains why he named it 'Pegasus': ". . . the flowers, especially on an established plant appear to sweep up and away in great fans and waves like the winged horse of Greek mythology springing from the blood of Medusa." The fruits are red, and elongated, and they hang like M. cylindrica. The tree has an upright habit with a strong central leader. Magnolia 'Pegasus' is a fantastic plant.
