Hybridized/Introduced By: Rare Find Parentage: (japonicum X dilatatum)
Description: A Rare Find Exclusive introduction. Rumor has it that this bush is a member of a well-known family of shrubby introductions from Washington. Hidden in obscurity and relegated to a remote test plot in Kennett Square, PA, it made its escape into the public domain where it can be recognized. It is sure to become a
"most wanted" and now this elusive beauty will be done justice. Profile: Its' putative parents are (V. japonicum x V. dilatatum). It comes out of hiding in May, rife with white flowers, in flat-topped corymbs about 6-8 inches acress. Leaves are about 6 inches long, rounded, bullate, very leathery and highly polished. With the first frosts, the leaves attempt to disguise themseles by developing a lustrous burgundy wine coloration that persists as the leaves are semi-evergreen. The effect is truly spectacular. Plant matures at about 8-10 feet tall and 15 feet wide, with a very symmetrical dome-shaped habit. Foliage is retained to the ground for effective camouflage. No fruit is produced, so no illegitimate seedlings to worry about. DNA samples have been taken and replicated. Propagules are available for distribution to willing supporters to help us put this shrub where it belongs — in your garden!
