ILEX xattenuata 'Longwood Gold'
|
Parentage: seedling of 'Fosteri'
Description: Longwood originally received this yellow berried holly in the early 1970s as an open-pollinated seedling from Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia. The plant was believed to be a rare holly species, Ilex forrestii, native to East Tibet and China. Morris Arboretum later re-identified the parent tree as Ilex x attenuata 'Fosteri', probably the result of a simple typing error. Longwood Gardens selected this perticular seedling for its yellow fruit color and superior cold tolerance.
