CHIONANTHUS virginicus
|
Description: A shrub-like tree to 20-25 feet in the olive family with a short trunk and a rounded crown. Opposite, deciduous, elliptical dark green glossy leaves. White, fragrant, showy blooms of strap-like petals appear with the foliage in the spring. Fruit are dark blue, oval drupes about 1 inch long produced on female plants. Native to moist, rich woodlands from Pennsylvania to Florida, and west to Arkansas and Texas. Often found near streams. Grows in full sun to partial shade in moist but well-drained soil.
