R. (AZALEA) DECIDUOUS cumberlandense (bakeri) 'Jerry's Tangerine'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: van de Sande Parentage: (cumberlandense, natural hybrid)
Description: Long time nurserywoman, Betty Cummins had a field full of native azaleas that she had grown on from cuttings donated by Clarence Towe and other sources from the South. Three particular plants in a row were all good and she chose one as her favorite. She offered Jerry a choice of the two left in exchange for some work he did for her. Jerry chose the one with the reddest orange flowers and immediately dubbed it “Tangerine.” A few years later, we grew out a batch of seeds from this plant and chose the one with the brightest strongest “tangerine” color. This plant blooms in early July, as does cumberlandense, which is after the calendulaceums have completed their fireworks.
