RHODODENDRON augustinii 'Berg's Hardy Form'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Originated by W. Berg, selected by A. Kehr
Description: For years, we Easterners have tried the West Coast forms of augustinii, and have generally failed. Augie Kehr grew a number of cuttings he received from Warren Berg in the 70's/80's, and identified this one clone as the most heat and cold tolerant. We received a new start on this plant some years ago from Berg. The flowers are a vibrant dark shade of blue, about 2 inches wide and held in clusters of 3 to 4, with dark green leaves. The plant is upright and compact. It has been a good performer here in NJ, but don't just take our word for it: try it and judge for yourself. Another form of which we have only a limited number. Prefers cooler (but not too cold!) climates- unfortunately not for the South or areas where temps fluctuate wildly!
