RHODODENDRON 'Jurassic Fantasy'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: (Al Raustein) Parentage: (fortunei X fictolacteum)
Description: A plant with a varied history, some of which is mysterious. Mary Oleri received it from the late Al Raustein, of Long Island. We obtained cuttings from her. Everyone who sees this in our garden stops and asks: "What is that?" Huge trusses of white with a large purple red blotch on the upper lobe makes all else pale in comparison. Petals recurve a bit-lending a very formal appearance. And it's very early – often in the first few days of May. The leaves are 10 inches long, thick and dark matte green, with a hint of brown indumentum, similar to 'Solidarity'. The leaves are exceptionally clean and are rarely chewed by insects. The white indumented new growth is very showy. We named it and put it into tissue culture.
