OSTRYA virginiana
|
Description: Tough as nails, the common name of ironwood should give you some idea of the unique characteristics of this plant. It's native to the upland forests of Eastern North America, and is adaptable to a range of difficult sites including urban settings and dry shade. The pointed oval leaves are dark green and delicately toothed along the edge. It forms a dense canopy in sun and is more open in shade, with a fairly narrow crown at maturity. The other common name of hop hornbeam comes from the interesting hop-like seed cones . The wood is very strong and resistant to ice damage. For a durable, undemanding and moderately sized tree, it's hard to beat Ostrya.
