Description: The genus monarda was named for Nicolas Monardes, a 16th century Spanish botanist. This selection of the durable prairie native M. fistulosa has lavender flowers. The species is much more drought tolerant than didyma. It can be seen along Missouri highways in tandem with orange Butterfly weed, Ascepias tuberosa, an attractive combination.
