R. (AZALEA) EVERGREEN 'Rice Kernel'
|
Parentage: (unknown, but probably a Satsuki)
Description: We obtained this azalea from Bill Steele who obtained
cuttings from Betts Layman's garden. Bill told us it seldom
blooms, but people like it anyway! The flower when it does
bloom is a salmony red not unlike other Satsuki's. 'Rice Kernel'
refers to the leaves, which are linear, about a half inch long and
arranged in whorls, giving the plant a soft almost furry appearance.
This is an excellent plant for a rock garden, between rocks, or at the top of a rock terrace.
