RHODODENDRON 'Peppermint Twist'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Thornton, breeder; Dr. L. Miller introducer Parentage: (hyperythrum X ‘Princess Elizabeth’)
Description: Len Miller lives outside Tulsa where 100°F is commonplace. He has long extolled the virtues of R. hyperythrum in producing heat and cold tolerant rhododendron hybrids. Len selected one of John Thornton's superior seed- lings, had it tissue-cultured, and aptly named it 'Peppermint Twist'. When you see it, you will realize how well the name fits. It has red buds, opening to rose pink flowers, with red flecks in the throat and a white circle in the throat which slowly grows larger each day. The overall effect is . . . well, it's like a "peppermint twist." Just as attractive as the flowers is the glossy
dark green foliage, which is held for three years on a vigorous, but compact, plant. This is one sweet rhody!
