RHODODENDRON 'Phipps Yellow'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: From the Phipp’s Estate Parentage: (Parentage Unknown, possibly a Hardgrove plant)
Description: Yes, 'Phipp's Yellow' has faults: it is an ungainly open grower with a loose truss which needs shade, and can lose some flowers in a cold year. Its leaves are lighter green and are held only for a year. We place compact plants around its base to hide its "knobby knees"! Why then grow it?? It's the FLOWERS!!! When it blooms you forget all about the faults. In my opinion, it is the best moderately hardy yellow in Zones 6 and 7. We have seen plants that have been repeatedly cut back and placed strategically in just the right balance of sun and shade, which end up as compact, but you have to work at it. About every five years I lose control and root a large number of 'Phipps Yellow' (as in this year), and
surprisingly an equally large number of customers lose control
and buy them.
