R. (AZALEA) DECIDUOUS schlippenbachii
|
Description: 'Royal' is an appropriate name for this 6-8 foot shrub, considered by many to be among the finest of deciduous azaleas. Needs some shade. Distinctive leaves are arranged in whorls of five. Blooming in late April and early May, the 2 to 3 inch wide flowers are open-faced, and appear in various shades of pink to white as the distinctive whorls of five leaves expand. Native to Korea and surrounding areas, Schlippenbachii reportedly enjoys a slightly higher pH and a bit more calcium than other rhodies, and needs some shade.
