R. (AZALEA) DECIDUOUS sanctum
|
Description: Also known as The Shrine Azalea because it was found growing in Southern Honshu in the sacred area of the great shrine of Ise. A rare offering, we grew ours from seed collected in Japan. Flowers are purplish pink to red, occasionally white, blooming after the new leaves emerge. The leaves are deciduous, and stunningly lustrous, unusual because they are rhombic in shape (look rhombic up, amaze your friends with your new found knowledge). Reported to grow up to 15 feet in the wild—but we doubt it will be taller than 6 to 7 feet in cultivation. Your plants will be labeled “sanctum var. lasiogynum,” which is how we received the seed. After much searching, we do not have a clue as to what that additional name means. If you know, contact us! Both types are listed as endangered species in Japan.
