R. (AZALEA) DECIDUOUS austrinum
|
Description: R. austrinum is a native of northern and western Florida, southwest Georgia, southern Alabama and southeastern Mississippi. Surprisingly, like R. chapmanii and Magnolia ashei, it is hardy in northern climates to about zone 6. It can grow to 10' in the wild, but in gardens it is usually smaller. R. austrinum blooms just before midseason and before its leaves emerge. The flower is tube-shaped, often in large trusses; the stamens extend far out of the tube. The color varies, from near white, through cream, yellow, to orange and near red. Its fragrance is powerful throughout the garden. This is one of the best native azaleas.
