R. (AZALEA) DECIDUOUS 'Marydel'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Polly Hill Parentage: Possibly a natural hybrid of R. atlanticum and R. periclymenoides
Description: If you need a smaller native azalea, picture a plant with lush, blue-green leaves. Now add medium pink flowers almost totally covering this wonderful plant. Plus, a seductive scent, and you have 'Marydel'. Polly Hill found it in the wild in Delaware near the Choptank River and the town of Marydel. It was registered in 1979 as a natural hybrid of R. atlanticum (coastal or dwarf azalea) and R. periclymenoides (Pinxterbloom). It was assumed to be a natural hybrid because atlanticum is almost always white flowered. Taxonomists, however, see no influence of R. periclymenoides in the plant, except perhaps the pink flower. Who knows what happens behind the bushes?
