R. (AZALEA) DECIDUOUS vaseyi
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: Vasey
Description: Discovered by George Vasey in 1878 in North Carolina, and found in only four mountainous counties in the western part of that state, making it rare in the wild. Flowers are distinctive, with short tubes and petal lobes deeply divided to the base, in shape resembling R. canadense. Usually flowering in shades of rose-pink; although white forms exist. Blooms occur before the leaves. R. vaseyi grows 5–10 ft tall. Our plants were grown from seed mixed from two adjacent garden plants, one the cultivar 'White Find,' the other a pink form. All the seedlings have screaming red fall foliage, an indication they probably will bloom rose-pink, not white.
