R. (AZALEA) DECIDUOUS reticulatum
|
Description: A deciduous Japanese native azalea with leaves in whorls of three. This is a tall growing shrub that is good for the back of the border. Its main feature is the early bloom before the leaves creating a cloud of lavender flowers. The branches are carried horizontally in distinct tiers, making for an exceptionally graceful appearance. An easy to grow species. We grew this from seed wild collected in Japan as R. sanctum var. lasiogynum, which it is not for 3 reasons. 1. It blooms at least a month too early, 2. It is the wrong color(sanctum should be reddish). 3. The leaves are not glossy like sanctum. Both species are endangered in their native Japan.
