R. (AZALEA) DECIDUOUS arborescens
|
Description: One of the most ornamental of our native azaleas found in a wide area from Pennsylvania south to Georgia and Alabama. Flowers are white or pale pink and occur fairly late, either with or usually after the leaves. The stamens are twice as long as the tube and the style is purplish-red. They have a wonderfully distinct
aroma of heliotrope. The leaves are smooth and branchlets are
usually not hairy, which helps to distinguish it from viscosum,
its nearest relative. Mature height is usually well over 5 feet and
it is usually not stoloniferous.
