R. (AZALEA) EVERGREEN 'Al's Picotee'
|
Hybridized/Introduced By: George Ring ARS Seed Exchange contribution in early 80’s Parentage: ('Elsie Lee' X kiusianum)
Description: A plant with an international circuitus history. George
Ring did the breeding in Virginia; Al Smith germinated the
seed in Niagra Falls, Canada, and gave Brian Schram (also
Canada) a flat of seedlings; Brian named one seedling 'Al’s
Picotee'; gave it to Jack Looye, an outstanding Dutch
nurseyman in Niagra On The Lake, He sent us cuttings in
1997 and we have grown it commercially since then. The
flower is hose-in-hose, large like 'Elsie Lee', with a white
throat and a strong lavender-pink edge. The plant forms a
compact evergreen dome and is an excellent performer in
Canada as well as here in the USA. Very distinctive and
attractive.
