IRIS japonica
|
Description: Ron collected this clone in Hunan Province, China, on the fog-shrouded Camellia Mountain. It was growing in moist soil in a small ravine on a very steep hillside. Bases of the fans had deep purple markings. Related to our native I. cristata, it grows 12 to 18 inches with multiple 3 to 4 inch flowers per stalk of a lacy sky blue and white. Spreads by underground rhizomes like I. cristata, but not clumping. It's fans can emerge several feet from the parent
fan. Probably hardy to Zone 6. A division has lived here in the
nursery for several years, forming a 4 x 4 colony.
