COTINUS coggygria 'Golden Spirit'
|
Description: This new, unique form from Holland, grows into a medium sized shrub with a broadly upright habit. Round leaves are a brilliant golden yellow throughout the Summer and are accompanied by the usual plumes of smoke-like flowers that other varieties of the species show. It also features the vivid fall colors of coral, orange and red. It prefers a well drained soil in full or part sun and should reach 8 feet x 6 feet in about 10 years. The leaves do NOT scorch in direct sunlight unless exceptionally dry conditions prevail; in fact the leaves go more golden and translucent the more sun they get. In fact that’s why this seedling was chosen. The nurseryman’s daughter, Truusje Sanders, recognized 'Golden Spirit'’s potential after the color turned deep yellow in the sun, rather than the greeny yellow seedling it had been in the shade.
