PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children is currently Virginia’s only pediatric long-term care residential facility for children to age 21 with severe mental and physical disabilities.
The Home, located in Norfolk, moved to its current site in 2005. The newly constructed 88,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in Norfolk is one of the few in the entire country designed and built to provide quality, home-like residential care to severely disabled children. St. Mary’s is a private, non-sectarian, non-profit organization.
Two large courtyards with floor-to-ceiling windows enable resident children, their visitors, family, and staff members to enjoy nature from inside the facility. Girl Scout Troop 5067, whose members include girls from the community and several St. Mary’s Home residents, began installing a Butterfly Garden one year ago in the first courtyard.
In May 2008, the Harborfront Garden Club in Norfolk agreed to work with Troop 5067 to maintain and augment the existing plantings. May 7, Harborfront members attended a planting session to add herbs, verbena, lantana, Mexican heather and other plants to attract butterflies and caterpillars with color and scent. St. Mary’s is hopeful that The Girl Scouts and Harborfront Garden Club can further enhance the Butterfly Garden in future with additions such as a waterfall, fish pond and wheelchair-accessible walkways to further enhance the residents’ enjoyment of this lovely outdoor space. This hope could be realized with a grant from RareFind Nursery....
