GARDEN HERO AWARDS PROJECT PROFILE

PROJECT ADDED:
October 24, 2008

NOMINATING GARDEN CLUB:
Glasgow Garden Club

LOCATION:
Weldon Park, Glasgow, Kentucky

THIS PROJECT BENEFITED:
People who walk the trail or come to identify native plants, and wildlife.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Glasgow Garden Club of Glasgow, Kentucky, a small town in rural south central Kentucky, partnered with the Glasgow Recreation Department this spring to do a beautification area along a walking trail in a city park, using native plants and trees.

The purpose of the project was to enhance established green space within the city limits, provide education to those who were interested in identifying native plants and trees, to provide beautification with flowers for walkers and joggers in promoting physical fitness, and to provide a source of food and shelter for wildlife, while being a "low maintenace" area for parks staff.

The parks staff began collecting leaves in February, cleared the site and brought in tree logs for a focal point in March. Meanwhile, the Garden Club members were busy researching native plants and trees that could withstand the full sun and windy environment where they would be planted, and in finding sources to purchase the plants and trees. The three trees, Mulberry, Holly, and Serviceberry were planted in March. The flowers were planted in April. The majority of the plants were labled in July, before we spent all of the money, and the project was completed .

To date we are pleased to report that we have not lost any of the trees or plants that we purchased, despite a 10 week period of only a quarter of inch of rain.

The Principal Financial Group, through the National Garden Club, provided a grant for the seed money for this project.

The Glasgow Garden Club would love to win the Garden Hero Award since we could use the plants in an upcoming project to rennovate a small park just off the square in the downtown area.

Thank you for your consideration.
Linda Craiger, Vice President, Glasgow Garden Club...
