Heuchera We lump Heuchera (mostly native) together with Tiarella because they are related in genetics and culture. Heucherellas, also included here, are the resultant hybrids. All are great multi- season plants for the woodland garden, interesting and colorful clumps of foliage plus attractive flowers.
Heuchera, a genus named for Johann Heinrich von Heucher
(1677-1747), German professor of medicine, contains about 55 species of evergreen and semi-evergreen perennials from woodland and rocky sites in North America. Plants have tufts of long-stalked, rounded, cordate leaves originating from somewhat woody rootstock, and slender stems. The leaves of some forms are boldly veined and shaded or variegated, and make excellent foliage plants. Small, five-petalled flowers with saucer to urn-shaped calyx tubes bloom well above the leaves in narrow, loose panicles or racemes . The blooms of some are quite colorful, usually pink or red.
We were asked last year by Charles and Martha Oliver of The Primrose Path Nursery to assume the retail portion of their Heuchera and Tiarella offerings as they have decided to shift their business to wholesale only. We have a good selection of their introductions this year, with more to come. Their hybrids are especially well-adapted to the Eastern US, as they were bred, tested, and selected here. Primrose PathTM varieties are noted in the offerings.
