Weigela We seem to have assembled quite a collection of weigelas, an old-fashioned shrub in the Honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae . The average weigela is ubiquitous in landscapes, drawing attention in late May and June with a colorful display of flowers, then fading back into the woodwork. But weigela is receiving new attention from plant breeders and the new ones offer much more variety in flower and leaf color, as well as different plant growth habits. Many even rebloom throughout the Summer. You won’t forget them.
As with most flowering shrubs, prune out the oldest wood right after flowering to assure maximum flower production. Most weigelas are quite cold-hardy to Zones 4 to 5, and endure a variety of site conditions with aplomb. Sun or shade, wet or dry, it doesn’t seem to matter much to this “tough as nails” per- former. They are reportedly deer-resistant as well. What more could you ask?
