Syringa (Lilac)
Evocative of Spring, we agree with the poet Longfellow, who declared, “I shall not go to town while the lilacs are in bloom.” Whether you prefer the lush opulence of the French hybrids or the dainty charm of the newer species hybrids, there’s a lilac for almost every garden! Many of our lilacs are hardy to USDA Hardiness Zone 3 and overwinter easily in colder climates. The hybrids of S. oblata do well in Southern landscapes as they are more heat tolerant. Lilacs can be planted singly or in groups in the landscape. They need strong sun for eight hours or more daily and a well-drained location in order to thrive. Lilacs also appreciate a neutral pH, so add lime or wood ashes if your soil is acid!

(C) One of the few re- blooming lilacs, with delicate single lavender-pink flowers and a semi-dwarf habit with small leaves. Very fragrant! more info

SYRINGA 'Old Glory'
A new introduction from the US National Arboretum for southern lilac-lovers. 'Old Glory' blooms in early spring with fragrant bluish-purple flowers on a plant of rounded habit. Medium bluish-green leaves are resistant to mildew. more info

SYRINGA 'Purple Haze'
Talk about flower power, while the individual flowers are not all that large, the plant makes up for this by indulging in quantity. When in bloom, the plant is covered in a purple haze as in a watercolor wash. The fragrant flowers are sterile. more info

SYRINGA 'Red Pixie'
(C) The plant has the appearance of S. meyeri, but the star-like flowers are pink and intensely fragrant, opening from delicate ruby buds. It is a plant of small stature, able to fit in many smaller landscapes. more info

SYRINGA oblata var. dilatata 'Cheyenne'
(C8) 'Cheyenne' is an excellent lilac for warm climates. Blooming 7 to 10 days earlier than common lilacs, it forms a symmetrical plant with pink buds opening to single light blue flowers. Very fragrant! more info

SYRINGA patula 'Miss Kim'
(C8) This excellent plant is slow growing, with a dense, rounded habit. It blooms heavily with very fragrant flowers which are described by Fiala as "very pale violet . . . with a lavender-bluish cast." Foliage colors up reddish maroon in fall. 2005 Cary more info

SYRINGA reticulata var. mandshurica
A smaller, more shrubby version of reticulata. Flowers are white, in large 6-12 inch panicles. We've been attempting to discipline these to grow as trees with variable success. more info

(C8) This Canadian introduction is a cold-hardy beauty of exceptional quality. Very large single deep violet florets of heavy substance. Buds are very large, resembling a bunch of purple grapes. more info

SYRINGA vulgaris 'Atheline Wilbur'
(C8) Individual florets open irregularly, giving a multicolored appearance to the entire bloom. The large and very fragrant clusters contain unopened deep pink buds and fully opened florets, showing a combination of rose, orchid, and lavender. more info
